Elk Grove Village Public Works

Originally built in 1960, this facility has served The Village in numerous capacities such as The Village Hall, The Police Station, and The Fire station. Unfortunately, the four-acre parcel was severely undersized for use as a modern Public Works facility. Also, its inefficient pie-shape and proximity to the single-family residential homes made operations difficult. In addition, the interior of the building was functionally obsolete and in need of significant work. ARCON was engaged by Elk Grove Village to plan and design a new, modern, state-of-the-artPublic Works facility that supported their administration and storage needs for the next 50 years.

“The completion of the new Public Works Facility is a major milestone in Elk Grove 2025. Public Works provides so many vital services to the community, and this facility will ensure efficient and effective operations in the years to come,” said Elk Grove Village Mayor Craig Johnson.

The new building sits on a campus of more than seven acres and includes 54,000 SF of garage space for all of Elk Grove Village’s vehicles, trailers, and equipment; 20,000 SF of office space for over (50) employees; and over 10,000 SF for utility and infrastructure shops. The facility also includes a wellness center, locker rooms, training rooms, and a lunch room. The new facility maximizes the use of natural light with a double clerestory in the main administration building, and (27) skylights in the vehicle garage. All lights are motion sensor controlled and adjusted to the amount of natural light that enters the space, saving energy. The new facility also optimizes operations through efficient design that includes the addition of an on-site salt barn, easy access to all equipment, and a smart water station. The project had an accelerated time schedule, starting with design to owner occupancy, the project was completed in less than two years.
